The Egypt Exploration Society

Department Member, London Office

Director

About

I have worked for the Egypt Exploration Society since 2001 and am now Director.

My research (when I have time to do any) focuses on the history of archaeology in Egypt and of Egyptology in general, with particular regard to the work of the Egypt Exploration Society. I am especially interested in 1) the extent to which the Society’s focus on promoting its work to the public and the need to raise funds from private sources influenced its research agenda and publications, and the development of collections of Egyptian material outside Egypt; 2) the effect this had on the development of Egyptology and public understanding of ancient Egypt.

I have been in charge of the EES archives since 2004, am director of the EES Oral History of Egyptology Project, and am overseeing the publication of Who Was Who in Egyptology (fourth edition) which is due to appear in 2012.

I have also spent a lot of time in the past thinking about the Egyptian Twenty-fifth Dynasty, and the effect of the various 'regime changes' and foreign influences before during and after it.
